Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were spotted at a Chiefs game during the week four matchup, and this has fans of Swift going wild. Their rumored relationship has been fully embraced by not only the media, but also the NFL.
The NFL has been advertising their relationship on social media platforms, including Tiktok and commercials. This was likely done in order to draw attention to fans of Swift, as to gain viewers and increase their income from streaming platforms. In an episode of his podcast, Kelce talked about his feelings towards the NFL’s display of their relationship.
“I think they’re overdoing it a little bit for sure,” Kelce, 33, said in his New Heights podcast on Wednesday.
One student believes that the NFL is showcasing their relationship for views.
“They’re definitely using Taylor Swift as a publicity stunt,” Starlett Xayachak (‘26) said. “They’re just doing it to bring in viewers and make money off her fans through streaming services and football games.”
Celebrities can rarely keep a relationship private or on the low because of the media’s need to feel included in their lives. Even less, if both parties are popular. We’ve seen this happen with Zendaya with Tom Holland, Jennifer Lopez with Ben Affleck, and Taylor Swift with Joe Alwyn. These couples tried to keep their relationship private but the paparazzi exposed them online. With fans who follow celebrities as a hobby to journalists who write about them all the time for money. It’s almost impossible to keep your relationship private as a celebrity.
An article called “Why are we so obsessed with celebrity power couples?” analyzes why we are so involved in celebrities’ lives. “Thanks to social media, it feels like we’re closer to these celebs than ever – we’re in their homes, following their daily lives, and it can feel like we’re watching a fairy-tale come to life,” Independent says.
We also got opinions on why they care about celebrities’ lives so much more than other people.
“I think that the reason we obsess with celebrities and their partners is because we want to see what we don’t have in other people,” Aisha Justilien (‘26) said. “So we root and make up ship names to make those people live the life we want.”
The media also tends to make negative comments on certain relationships. A prime example of this is none other than Swift. Every Time she’s had a boyfriend, she’d receive backlash that her boyfriends are too good for her or that the reason she’s famous is because of her past boyfriends.
