Most anticipated movies of 2022

After two years of primarily streaming movies during the pandemic, 2022 is expected to bring plenty of movies to the big screen. From Marvel’s highly anticipated lineup to the latest Scorsese film, this year is going to be jam packed with movies to see at the local theater.

Rian Johnson’s murder mystery film “Knives Out” was a hit when it premiered in 2019. The sequel to this movie, currently titled “Knives Out 2” is set to come out sometime this year. In this sequel, Daniel Craig returns as Detective Benoit Blanc, starring alongside a new ensemble cast: Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista, Leslie Odom Jr., Ethan Hawke, Janelle Monáe, Kate Hudson, Jada Pinkett Smith and more. No plot points have been revealed but it will be another murder mystery and set in Greece.

Another highly anticipated movie for this year is “Killers of the Flower Moon,” directed by Martin Scorsese. The film is based on the 2017 nonfiction book “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI” by David Grann. It is classified as a western movie centering around the Osage tribe living on a reservation in Oklahoma when oil is discovered on their land. Cast members include Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, Brendan Fraser, Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons. There is no definitive release date yet.

“DiCaprio and Scorsese are one of my actor-director duos and I’m excited to see them work together again,” said Addie Winter (’22).

Later on in the year, Olivia Wilde’s highly anticipated psychological thriller, “Don’t Worry Darling,” hits the big screen. The movie is set to be released on Sept. 23. The star-studded cast includes Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Gemma Chan and Chris Pine. Very little is known about the plot, except that Pugh stars as a 1950s housewife who suspects her husband (Styles) is hiding a terrible secret.

“So far we’ve only seen Harry Styles chew bread in Dunkirk so I’m interested to see if he can really act. I also enjoyed ‘Booksmart’ so I’m eager to see how [Wilde’s] second film is,” said Winter.

In terms of blockbuster action movies, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has a lot in store this year. Following the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Avengers: Endgame,” there are plenty of exciting cliffhangers and unanswered questions. The release date for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is currently May 6. The first trailer for this movie premiered in the post-credits scene of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” After Doctor Strange opened the door to the Multiverse in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the Multiverse poses threats to humanity. Doctor Strange teams up with Wanda Maximoff (aka Scarlet Witch) and his fellow sorcerer, Wong. Other MCU blockbusters scheduled to come out this year include “Thor: Love and Thunder” (July 8) and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Nov. 11).
