The National Zoo houses over 200 animals and has over 10 exhibits spread across about 160 acres. It is a short drive away, located in DC and has free admission, yet it is often overlooked. Although some people think zoos are just for kids, the National Zoo is sure to have something for everyone, from the Reptile Discovery Center to the Small Mammal House.
The zoo has a simple layout, with a large main path stretching across the park, and various exhibits veering off the main path. This makes it easy to find your favorite exhibits and allows the foot traffic to flow smoothly. The zoo also has a solid range of food options to satisfy hunger, from Elevation Burger to Auntie Anne’s. If guests venture out of the zoo, they will also find a wide range of restaurants nearby.
There are some exciting new additions to the zoo, like Linh Mai, a baby elephant that was born in February. She is the first calf to be born at the zoo in almost 25 years. She’s still settling in, so you won’t be able to see her just yet, but the zoo is posting updates about her regularly on the website. Two sloth bears were also born in December and are with their mother at the Asia Trial exhibit.
Overall, if you are looking for an inexpensive, fun activity to do with friends or family outdoors, the National Zoo is a great option.
