On April 10, two-time Grammy winner Laufey Lín Bing Jónsdóttir, also known as Laufey, released a deluxe album titled “A Matter of Time: The Final Hour.” It is a 19-song collection, featuring four new original songs. As a whole, “A Matter of Time: The Final Hour” features an introspective, ‘70s vibe. Laufey’s signature jazzy-orchestral sound is brilliantly showcased through her unique storytelling and emotional lyricism.
“Madwoman” is one of the new songs in the album, alongside “I Will Forget (In Time),” “I Wait, I Wait, I Wait” and “How I Get.” Accompanied by a music video featuring Hudson Williams, Lola Tung, Megan Skiendel and Alysa Liu, “Madwoman” describes being attracted to a toxic relationship.
Rating: 4.2/5
“Madwoman,” hyped up by the release of its accompanying music video, contains swinging tempos and a unique 12/8 time signature that quickly went viral on numerous media platforms. However, the melody of the song could become repetitive and redundant to listeners after many streams of the song. Due to this, “Madwoman” is rated 4.2/5.
One of the most iconic songs written by Laufey, “Lover Girl,” was released on June 25 of 2025, as a single and included in the new album. This song showcases her classic jazzy style with a twist of soft pop. “Lover Girl” represents the intense, dizzying emotions of falling in love, and the hope of reciprocating feelings. Although this song has a swoony, lovestruck narrative, Laufey includes how being deeply in love can feel like a “curse,” displaying the struggle of keeping a partner in love.
Rating: 5/5
“Lover Girl” is a song with a catchy beat that will get anyone humming. It is a classic Laufey track, composed of a romantic rhythm and polished vocals. It’s Laufey’s most popular, and, arguably, her most well-written song. Therefore, “Lover Girl” earns a 5/5 rating.
“How I Get” is an emotionally vulnerable track that shows Laufey’s more mature and pensive songwriting. Laufey describes her song beautifully, saying “[it is a] reflection on the contrast between being disciplined, grounded and in control, versus the chaotic, all-consuming and destructive nature of intense love.”
Rating: 4.5/5
“How I Get”, even though it is a wonderfully written piece of music, could be considered too slow for some listeners. Its intense emotional lyricism, however, makes up for the tempo, since it evokes a deep emotional reaction within readers. For these reasons, “How I Get” earns a 4.5/5 rating.
The song “Silver Lining”, released on April 3 of 2025, is the second most listened to song within the album. “Silver Lining” exhibits Laufey’s mixed style of jazz and pop. She personally described the song as a “love song about being able to set your true personality free when you fall in love.” It is a track that exudes the emotions and complexities of taking safe harbor in someone you hold dear, especially when you are drowning in a constant state of turmoil.
Rating: 4/5
“Silver Lining” is a wonderfully composed song, however it is not tailored to the preferences of the general public due to its slow nature. Like many of Laufey’s songs, however, the storytelling provides the foundation for a deep, vulnerable song that makes up for the sometimes sluggish tempo. That being said, “Silver Lining” earns a 4/5 rating.
