Science Olympiad places first at Regionals
February 27, 2017
Countless hours of preparation, studying, cramming and hard work have all led up to this moment. On February 25th, Science Olympiad competed in regionals at Fairfax High School against a variety of high schools in Northern Virginia. The Science Olympiad students put in hard work leading up to the competition and it payed off when they placed first in the competion.
“We don’t meet too often [in school]. Students usually take their own initiative to study with their partners outside of school and on weekends. For building events, partners also have to meet up outside of school to plan, design, and build their engineering events.” Science Olympiad Vice President Candace Miu (’18) said.
It was crucial for students to take the necessary steps outside of school to be prepared for Regionals. Science Olympiad competed in a variety of events including astronomy, helicopters, anatomy, wind/power, geology etc. They have written and hands-on events. According to club members, Science Olympiad is extremely rewarding but can also be challenging.
“I would say the hardest part is finding the time outside of our busy school and other extracurriculars to meet up with teammates and study or build. It can also be hard for newer members who are sometimes paired up with strangers to open up to working with new teammates and learn to work cooperatively.” Miu (’18) said.
The hard work and many hours put in preparing, however, payed off in the end.
“The best part of Science Olympiad is definitely spending time with friends to grow intellectually and getting to show off what you’ve worked hard for in competitions. Of course, winning medals and ranking above other schools is also super rewarding and builds school spirit.” Miu (’18) said.
Science Olympiads biggest competitors were TJ and Langley.
“At our invitational competition we beat the TJ team who is pretty dominant.” President Owen Haines (’17) said.
The team continued their momentum beating all the Northern Virginia teams at regionals.
