As holiday spirit sweeps over the town of Vienna once again, the seasonal love for traditions returns, and for some, that means taking their annual visit to the Meadowlark Botanical Gardens Winter Walk of Lights. The Meadowlark light show has been a staple winter activity in the community for the past 13 years. With impressive light displays and delicious drinks to keep visitors warm, it is a great place for friends and family to come together during the holiday season.
Open from mid-November to late-January, the Meadowlark Winter Walk of Lights is open to all ages. Tickets start at $18, \ and some nights called “pup nights” even offer admission for dogs for only an additional $6. While drinks and snacks are not included in the ticket prices, they are available to purchase at a cozy fire pit along the lit up trail. Meadowlark also has hot chocolate and s’mores kits up for purchase that can provide fun for anyone. While it can be pricier for large groups, most students would argue that the expense is worth it.
“I am planning on going with Best Buddies this year in a large group,” Nate Goss (’25) said. “It is pretty expensive, but I think the joy it will bring everyone is more important than how much it costs.”
The walk opens just after dark and immediately immerses the visitor in a grand display of holiday and nature themed lights. From sound sensitive trees that dance to holiday tunes, to animated koi fish that dive into a sea of glowing blue, this light show includes visuals that can’t be seen anywhere else.
“I love the giant tunnel of rainbow lights that you can walk under towards the end of the show,” Lily Siddon (’28) said. “My friends and I got great pictures there!”
Along the lit up path, there are also many backdrops for photo opportunities including massive arches and lights that reflect over the lake. Santa’s sleigh also provides a perfect spot where families can take pictures and enjoy the backdrop of lights. Most of the lights are animated and allow viewers to follow the paths of animals across the park as they flicker on and off giving the illusion that they are moving.
While the walk of lights is entertaining for all ages, they also have unique features that cater to younger crowds. One part of the show that especially captivates younger visitors is a path of floor tiles that light up as you walk across them. Additionally, there is a light scavenger hunt that can be completed by families with children that can be turned in for a prize at the end of their walk.
“I go every year with my family and my little cousins,” Sarah Biddick (’25) said. They always look forward to doing the scavenger hunt, and it makes it a more entertaining experience for my whole family.”
The Meadowlark Botanical Gardens Winter Walk of Lights is a festive tradition that offers something for everyone. Whether enjoying a warm drink, capturing holiday photos or exploring interactive features, it’s a magical experience for all ages. Make sure to bring a warm coat, your family and friends and create lasting memories at this beloved Vienna holiday destination.
