For Vienna residents, it is almost impossible to miss the Vienna Inn and the smell of chili-dogs wafting across Maple Avenue. Established in 1960, the Inn became a cornerstone of the community as a casual and home-like place for anyone to come and enjoy a meal or catch up with friends. Self-described “as comfortable as an old pair of shoes,” with its relaxed vibe, the Inn has become a second home to much of the Madison community.
Located just a short distance from Madison, Waters Field and the W&OD trail, the Inn has been a top spot to gather for students, teachers, athletes and alumni. Whether it’s afterschool meals, birthday parties or takeout, the Inn offers an inviting and nostalgic place for everyone with mouth-watering food.
“The Inn serves as a place that lots of Madison athletes feel welcome in,” Oscar Espanol (’25) said. “The staff is very friendly and kind to us as soon as we walk in.”.
Madison athletes and Vienna Youth Inc have found a team hub in the Vienna Inn, where parties often spill over into the dining room. The walls are lined with photos and trophies, showcasing the accomplishments of local sports teams and cementing the Inn’s reputation as the ultimate post-practice or post-championship spot. It’s not unusual to see entire teams enjoying meals together after games, creating a sense of camaraderie that stretches far beyond the field.
Warhawk Football especially has grown a bond with the Vienna Inn, taking pre-season photos there. Players were seen in booths, at the chili dog bar and outside, showing how the Inn fosters the spirit of Madison athletics. In addition, the annual rivalry football game between Oakton and Madison is nicknamed, “the Vienna Inn Bowl.”
“The inn is very supportive of Madison athletics, every time I go in there they ask me about the team and they also provide a team dinner for us every year,” Ari Rosenberg (’25) said.
The affordability and old-school menu adds to the charm, with prices staying consistent throughout economic changes. Wing and rib nights, seafood and hotdog specials draw even more customers in, especially students wanting to grab food with friends, without breaking the bank. When surveyed, students said their favorite items were the chili-dogs, chicken sandwich and the mozzarella sticks.
“Personally, I LOVE the Reese’s peanut butter cup cake and mozzarella sticks,” Abigail Cramer (‘27) said.
The Vienna Inn is more than just a restaurant, it’s a living, breathing part of Vienna’s history and culture. Whether it’s a casual lunch with friends, a celebration dinner after a big win or a quick bite, the Inn continues to bring the Madison and Vienna community together one chili dog at a time.
