Golf:
After starting their season with a second place finish at the Don Roth Warhawk Invite, golf finished the season strong with a 7-1 record and got first place in the Concorde District. Finishing third in the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Golf Championships was an accomplishment for the team as they had not qualified for states the previous year. Isaiah Isi (‘27) reflects on this team accomplishment as he and his team successfully met their goal for the season.
“Our team made our goal of making it to states this year after falling short last year,” Isi said.
Field Hockey:
After going 9-3 and placing second in the Concorde District, the field hockey team recently beat the Stafford Indians 3-1 to win VHSL State Semifinals, and will compete against the Langley Saxons on Nov. 15 for the VHSL State Championship. EG Cate (’26) attributes the team’s success to their dedication.
“I think probably [I would describe the team as] hardworking because I think we work hard at practice and then that translates into the games,” Cate said.
Girls Volleyball:
The girls volleyball team has had a very successful season as well. With a 22-3-1 record, the girls volleyball team placed first in the Class 6 division and ranked ninth in Virginia. Avrie Duong (’28) attributes the team’s success to their strong bond and shared goals. This ability to connect effortlessly stemmed from their shared love of the sport.
“We all play volleyball and go through the same cycle of practices and games, so we can all relate to the sport,” Duong said.
The team’s achievement in bonding is clearly illustrated by their victory over the Westfield Bulldogs, which crowned them as the Concorde District Champions, as well as their triumph against the Wakefield Warriors to maintain their momentum in the regional competition. At time of publication, the volleyball team beat South Lakes to secure a spot in the Regional Championship against Marshall.
Boys Volleyball:
The boys’ volleyball team had a challenging season, finishing 3-14 in their regular season and fifth in the Concorde District. A major challenge the volleyball team encountered was filling up every position due to the lack of popularity of boys volleyball in this area. Brody Bailey (’27) expressed the difficulty of changing volleyball positions due to the lack of players.
“Because the sport is less popular in our area, there aren’t many students feeding into the program every year; this makes it hard for each unique player [to play] position[s] they may not be accustomed to,” Bailey said.
Another challenge the boys volleyball team faced was an increase in competition in the district. The previous season, the boys volleyball team finished third in the Concorde District, ahead of Westfield, Chantilly and Centerville. This year, the boys volleyball team ranked only above Centerville, as Chantilly finished third in the league and Westfield finished fourth.
“The league had significantly evolved from last season, with new top players emerging from every team,” Bailey said.
Varsity Girls and Boys Cross Country:
The girls and boys cross country team both had solid seasons. Girls cross country placed 14th at the Monroe Parker Meet, 14th at the Braddock Relays, 15th at the Great American meet and 18th at the XC Showcase. While the boys team placed 21st at the Monroe Parker Meet, 19th at the Braddock Relays, 24th at the Great American and 36th at the XC Showcase. Despite their achievements, both teams unfortunately placed sixth in their district, making them unable to qualify for regionals.
For girls cross country, this season was a rebuilding year after losing many of their varsity runners. This, along with post season injuries impacted their performance. Even through these challenges, runner Sonya Rooney (’27) is optimistic about the future outlook of the team.
“…we gained a lot of promising freshmen and had a lot of spirit,” Rooney said. “I’m really excited for the future seasons to further develop team culture and develop our running skills.”
Football:
After the football team had a challenging 0-2 start to the season with a 7-0 loss to Stone Bridge and 34-31 loss to Lake Braddock, the football team worked hard through the season eventually finishing 3rd in the Concorde District and ending the regular season with a 6-4 record. The football team is now gearing up to take on the Langley Saxons for playoffs. After reaching the state championship last year, the football team aims to return to that level of play. Achieving this goal demands dedication and concentration from the team. Owen Mannering (‘26) shares his thoughts on the team’s attitude towards making a comeback to the state championship.
“We’ve been focusing really hard in practice trying to nail our gameplan to be ready for Friday night…it all starts with Langley and we know we have to take it week by week, and go undefeated every week,” Mannering said.
