As the cold winter air slowly departs, spring greets the world, and a season of nature awaits. One way to celebrate is to go out and enjoy the several hikes the DMV offers. Northern Virginia is renowned for its good balance between urban and scenic trails.
One of the most visited hikes is the Billy Goat Trail. A picturesque hike, known for its challenging terrain and rock scrambles, offers spectacular views of the Potomac River. There are three different sections you may adventure in. Section Trail A of Billy Goat is a 1.7-mile hike featuring the most extreme rock scrambles of the bunch, and squeezing through the Mather Gorge is no small feat. Challenging all skill levels, Mather Gorge is a tight portion of the trail featuring steep and jagged rock crossings with high-intensity views of the river if you’re looking for a more recreational hike, not to worry, Billy Goat offers Section Trail B and C, which are less intense, providing more forest scenery, and have easier terrain. It features a sandy beach area, and it’s perfect for bird watching or those looking for dog-friendly outings.
Caitie Pendleton (’27) enjoys a variety of outdoor activities, hiking being one of her favorites.
“Billy Goat Section A is just the right amount of challenging for me, and the views are spectacular,” Pendleton said. [It’s a] great way to spend time with friends.”
Another great option in the southern area of the DMV, near George Mason University, is the Bull Run Occoquan trails. Offering a quiet escape into the woods, the Occoquan Trail stretches out for miles and has hikes for all skill levels. The trails feature a variety of steep climbs, descents and stream crossings. A unique component of this natural reservoir is its numerous historic sites that are right along the paths. The trails pass through areas that are significant to the Civil War and the Revolutionary War.
Great Falls Park is a unique hiking location featuring several waterfalls. Its location, where the Potomac River narrows and drops over a series of jagged rock formations, provides powerful and breathtaking views. This is the best option for families who want an easy hike with level terrain.
Jack Gilman (’27) loves strolls through Great Falls.
“It’s a great way to spend time outdoors and go on a leisurely hike,” Gilman said.
Lastly, although it’s a little bit more of an adventure from the DC metro area, Harpers Ferry is the perfect place to hike and spend time in a small town. With its secluded location and rich history, the town’s involvement in the Civil War, such as John Brown’s raid, makes it a fun and historical day trip for the entire family. The actual hike culminates in a scenic view of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers from cliff tops, combining physical exertion with historical context and a variety of terrains.
Whether you prefer a more relaxed stroll through nature in Great Falls Park or want to scale the rocky scrambles of the Billy Goat Trail, the DMV has the trail for you.
