Art is essential in society today. Art can reflect more than what meets the eye, such as people’s personalities, styles, cultures and more. There are so many different styles of art, and there are still so many styles being developed today. With so many styles of art, students have the opportunity to try many different things in their art courses. Madison art courses are a great way to not just connect with other students, but also learn more about art that is used in our everyday lives. Students specifically have varying perspectives on the importance of art education, especially in high school. High school is a time to explore and find one’s identity, and art can be a great way to do so.
Madison offers numerous art classes, including Studio Art & Design, Photography, and Digital Art. All these courses take a unique approach to the arts, and have unique styles specific to the course. Students may find that art is an outlet to express themselves, and this sense of self-expression makes preserving art education even more important.
“Art class has provided a relaxing break from my other classes,” Asiya Siddique (‘26) said. “I like that art education is more hands-on, it helps clear my head.
While other electives are important as well, art has a unique sense of freedom. Students are assigned specific assignments to complete for the class, but have the freedom to follow the instructions for what to do, but then do what they want using their creativity. Freedom also gives students a boost of confidence. Instead of stressing about if they did something wrong on an assignment, students can express themselves through the project while simultaneously doing well on the project.
Art education can have an effect on how students do in other classes. Many students think of themselves as visual learners, so projects with more creativity and hands-on work can help students in other classes. Understanding material is the key to success in a course, so the use of art in classes, whether online or on paper, can benefit students greatly. Participation in the arts can offer a better understanding of concepts in school as well as in the world.
