During this holiday season, many opt to give back to the community, which would not only help those in need, but add extra joy to the holidays. Especially during the winter months, activities like volunteering and donating are vital for helping the more vulnerable.
Local Community
There are numerous organizations around the DMV that aim to help those in need. The Committee for Helping Others (CHO) is a local, all-volunteer organization that was created by churches and individuals in Vienna, Oakton, Dunn Loring and Merrifield in 1969. The organization’s goal is “to provide simple, loving charity to those in need of goods and services.”
CHO facilitates a year-round food and clothes closet. The drop off point for in-season clothing donations and food donations is currently at Vienna Presbyterian Church, but it can change, so check the website to confirm. You can also find a list of current needs and a link to an Amazon wishlist on CHO’s website. Make sure to call 703-281-7614 and leave a message in box 1 to schedule an appointment for dropping off food donations.
Another rewarding activity you can do with friends or family is offering to help an elderly neighbor shovel their snow or rake their leaves. You can invite some friends to help tackle the task with you, making it a fun activity while also helping someone out.
Supporting Animal Shelters
If you are an animal person, or just interested in donating to animal shelters, there are many organizations around the area that share that passion. Three places that are somewhat near Vienna are Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation (LDCRF), located in Falls Church, and the two Fairfax County Animal Shelters (FCAS): Lorton campus and Michael R Frey campus, located in Fairfax. FCAS has a few posted wishlists for each of their campuses, which can be found on the Fairfax County website. You can drop off donations at either campus, but make sure to come during their business hours and bring donations directly to the customer care staff. LDCRF has a few linked wishlists posted on their website, and a main one with their most-needed items. You can drop off donations for LDCRF at 6801 Wilson Blvd, Falls Church, VA, the location of their Rescue Care Center, but make sure to come during the drop off times: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Angel Tree Program
If you like shopping, The Salvation Army facilitates the annual Angel Tree Program, which is a partnership between The Salvation Army and various organizations. The program is focused on gifting holiday presents to kids who otherwise may not have the means to receive gifts. You can find Angel Trees in some Walmarts, department stores or local organizations. First, look for the Angel Tree display with tags on it. Next, pick a tag and shop for the items on the list. Once you finish shopping, follow the delivery instructions on the tag, which usually involve dropping the items off at the Angel Tree location, or delivering them to the specified Salvation Army location.
Ultimately, there are numerous opportunities in the area to give back to the community and help those in need, so if you have some extra time to spare during this busy holiday season, consider doing some of these fun activities to spread the holiday joy.
