The 98th annual Academy Awards took place on Sunday, March 15 in Los Angeles, highlighting the accomplishments of actors over the past year. This year, like any other, there were historical wins and shocking results.
In one of the most coveted categories each year, best actor, Michael B. Jordan took home the trophy for his role in “Sinners”. In this role, Jordan played twin characters, Smoke and Stack. He is commended for his ability to depict two characters with unique personalities in one project. By winning this award, Jordan became the sixth African American man to ever win the category. “Sinners” is a movie surrounding topics of racism and faith, and features a cast of predominantly people of color. The film was nominated for a record-breaking 16 Academy Awards and won in four of those categories. A few of those nominated categories included best picture, director, supporting actor and supporting actress. All of these categories show that this film was highly acclaimed.
With this success of “Sinners” came some shocking losses. Notably, “Marty Supreme”, a movie with nine nominations, did not win any awards. These nominations included best picture, director and original screenplay. Timothée Chalamet was a frontrunner for best actor along with Jordan. Chalamet has been under public scrutiny since making a controversial comment about ballet and opera, saying they were outdated art forms and “no one cares”. Since the interview where he made this comment was released, many online were satisfied with the results of Chalamet’s loss.
Overall, Jordan’s best actor win at the 98th Academy Awards is a historic moment for representation in Hollywood. His standout performance in “Sinners” and the film’s unprecedented success demonstrate the power of diverse storytelling. Jordan’s victory celebrates both exceptional talent and the industry’s growing commitment to recognizing meaningful voices.
