“Hamilton”: The world-renowned musical with countless ecstatic reviews and numerous Tony nominations and awards is an entertainment masterpiece. Though, what makes “Hamilton” so popular? It has very catchy tunes that go beyond any musical theater song. It has a variety of music types such as hip-hop, traditional show tunes, rap, R&B and pop, allowing the musical to reach out to a variety of audiences. It’s a musical that humanizes historical figures visually, with energetic storytelling about who Alexander Hamilton was, and how he didn’t throw away his shot.
“Hamilton” is seen as a riveting musical, telling the story of a well-known historical figure who helped shape America, with an almost historically correct storytelling. A few examples include how Aaron Burr and Hamilton weren’t the strong and dynamic-duo the musical made them out to be. They still became allies because of the American Revolution, later developing a strong rivalry. The Schuyler sisters didn’t just consist of an iconic trio, there were eleven additional siblings. These little mistakes are what makes “Hamilton” an entertaining blend of both historical facts and fiction elements to create a more coherent story.
Another factor that led to “Hamilton’s” popularity was it being one of the very few stage-performed musicals published on a streaming platform. Once an original-cast production of “Hamilton” released on Disney+, its popularity spiked in 2020, then again in 2025 when the original cast reunited for a 10th-anniversary performance at the Tony Awards along with multiple movie screenings of the recorded production. Before “Hamilton” even hit Broadway, tickets began to sell out during their first tour in early 2015, with tickets reaching up to $275. Now, in 2025 tickets go up to $1525.50 because of Leslie Odom Jr. returning to Broadway, as the original actor to take on the role of Aaron Burr.
“Hamilton” offers an ample amount of appeal to most with any sort of history interest such as APUSH students, general history buffs and of course, theater kids. It’s an eye-catching way to experience who lived on to tell Hamilton’s story. Hamilton wrote like he was running out of time, hoping he could create a legacy for himself and his family. Hamilton’s impact on history goes beyond what is taught in classrooms, it has now bled into today’s media and is extremely more popular than ever expected.
