Autumn is a time for comfort. When the leaves turn brown and the bonfires start crackling, cozy blankets are hauled out and humans snuggle into the timeless traditions of the fall. For many students, one of the most important autumnal rituals is watching (or rewatching) “Gilmore Girls”, the classic series following the story of a mother, Lorelai, and her daughter, Rory, navigating the joys and pitfalls of life hand-in-hand.
While Lorelai and Rory have an entertaining dynamic, there is a different factor that draws many viewers in: the setting. The quaint town of Stars Hollow is the epitome of small town magic, complete with bantering neighbors and charming establishments. Although Stars Hollow’s coziness can feel distant from the rush of the current cultural climate, Vienna can offer a glimpse into the leisurely lifestyle that many “Gilmore Girls’” fans crave, if one knows where to look.
Luke’s Diner and the Vienna Inn: Luke’s Diner is arguably the most important location in Gilmore Girls, with almost every episode at least briefly stopping by its doorstep. From its gigantic coffee cups to its enticing cinnamon rolls, the diner is a hot spot in Star’s Hollow that brings people together and fosters a sense of community. Similarly, the Vienna Inn plays a nearly identical role in Vienna, especially on crisp fall weekends. It serves as a gathering place for teams, parents and friends who are seeking a comfortable setting and a delicious meal. Although its coffee mugs aren’t quite as iconic as Luke’s, the spirit of fellowship and community remains.
Star’s Hollow Town Square and the Town Green: Picnics, town meetings, concerts, carnivals; it’s funny how a patch of grass can be so uniting. The Star’s Hollow Town Square and Vienna Town Green share this common mission, to unite, and both do it extremely well. From the Winter Carnival to the Bid-a-Basket auction, the Gilmore girls love themselves a town square event. For Vienna inhabitants, the effect of the Town Green plays a similar role. Whether it’s Viva Vienna, Chillin’ on Church or summer concerts, the Town Green brings the community together to celebrate its shared identity.
Main Street and Church Street: Avid “Gilmore Girls” fans know that Main Street is the connector of all important things; Luke’s sits on the corner and Doose’s Market is just a few doors down, near the local book store. Lorelai and Rory are frequent visitors of Main Street, enjoying its shopping and picturesque views. Church Street is the Vienna equivalent of Main Street, bringing the town’s history to a central location. The Caboose, Cafe Amouri, Coco Vienna, John Edward’s Hair Salon, Kiln and Custard, the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) trail; Church Street is lined with locations essential to capturing Vienna’s spirit. Similar to Main Street, it showcases the town’s unique culture in a classic way.
It’s not the physical makeup of these places that make them special to their communities; it’s their purpose. They celebrate each town’s culture. They bring people together in a seamless way that little else can do nowadays. Without these Vienna establishments, what would our town be?
